After cleaning and lubricating the chain, slowly rotate the crankset in reverse; all the links exiting the rear derailleur should straighten out. If any links still retain a noticeable angle, it indicates poor movement and a “dead knot,” which requires adjustment. Any links found to be damaged must be replaced promptly. For chain maintenance, it is recommended to strictly distinguish among the three types of pins and use connecting pins.

For bikes with a rear derailleur, before cutting the chain, shift it to the smallest front sprocket and the smallest rear sprocket. This will loosen the chain, making it easier to work with and reducing the chance of it snapping back when you cut it.

When using a chain breaker, be sure to keep it level; this will help prevent the punch from becoming misaligned. Handle the tool with care—this not only protects the tool itself but also ensures excellent results. Otherwise, the tool may easily become damaged, and a damaged tool is more likely to harm the parts, creating a vicious cycle.
