Working Principle of the Chain Conveying Mechanism in a Printing Press

2026-07-15

In high-speed offset presses, the linear velocity of the gripper bar is very high. Taking the J2204 model as an example, at a printing speed of 10,000 sheets per hour, 2.77 sheets pass through the gripper bar each second. Therefore, the gripper bar must be lightweight, feature large arc transitions, and have a reduced number of links to facilitate high-speed printing.

The number of chain‑sprocket rows and the length of the delivery chain depend on the overall layout of the printing press. A shorter delivery chain results in a more compact, cost‑effective machine, whereas a longer delivery chain allows sufficient time for the ink to set and provides adequate space for drying units, anti‑sticking powder‑spraying devices, and sheet‑leveling mechanisms. For example, the Js2101 offset press has four rows of sprockets, the H4880‑01 model has seven rows, and the J2203A model features thirteen rows.

The paper‑gripping tooth‑bar shaft on the delivery chain is typically mounted on a bracket, and there are several ways to connect the bracket to the chain. One approach is to mount the bracket for the paper‑gripping tooth directly onto the chain links. Both the pivot axis of the movable tooth and the axis of the paper‑gripping pad are seated in holes in the bracket. The bracket is rigidly attached to an extended pin of the sleeve‑roller chain, while a slider is fitted onto the other pin of the sleeve‑roller chain; this slider slides within a guide groove in the bracket. Because, during straight‑line motion, the center distance between pins 3 and 4 equals twice the chain pitch (2t), whereas when the chain engages with the sprocket this center distance falls below 2t, the slider–guide‑groove arrangement accommodates variations in the pin spacing, ensuring proper meshing between the chain and the sprocket at all times. This design is relatively simple and is widely used in domestically produced machines. However, since the chain bears the weight of the paper‑gripping tooth bar and experiences significant loading during tooth opening, it tends to wear out more rapidly.
